It is neither happy nor sad, young or old. It is like a flow of water from a tap that has no perturbations, so that it makes no sound, and it almost becomes invisible in its persistence, because of its persistence.
It is not a seam being built and unbuilt from one moment to the next. And then there this core of the self, independent of all of that processing, simply watching and aware, providing the awareness, like streams flowing from a source.Īnd that core awareness is so pure, so unbroken in its chain. It's persistence in that kind of state is in many ways surprising, as it is surprising to find that at the subconscious level, there isn't simply 'one' flow, but many, moving at the same time, each one creating and unravelling knots of meaning. That is entirely untouched by all these movements and shapes that the mind is exploring.

Imagine seeing a dozen threads of thought playing out at the same time, and it is as if any sense of linear time and existence has disappeared and you exist inside multiple thought patterns at the same time, like different tV sets playing, and you are AWARE of each story at the same time, so you have 8 or so stories or paths playing out, and you are aware of all of them, and you are aware of something separate from them. In my experience, the stopping of the flow is not something that happens independently of what is happening in the mind, but rather in parallel. It isn't about emptying, it is about being fully present in whatever state you happen to find yourself. The key is mindfulness - not mindlessness. It is also an exercise of will, and there are other paths that try to achieve the 'effortless state' by disengaging the will, so that whatever your mind chooses to do, you follow it with mindfulness. Refusing to have interest in thoughts in order to step outside of that flow of 'chatter' and into something underneath/beyond is to my mind a legitimate path. It is easier to not be interested in the flow when the flow is not teasing you with things you do not understand, especially the sources of your own sufferings. There are times and places for all things. Ramana also encouraged his followers to engage in self-inquiry. Meditation Pics - for meditation-related images.
